All in a day's work: Adrienne the Nurse

Adrienne the nurse

Sixty-three-year-old Adrienne works in a very busy post anaesthetic unit. Her job involves lots of walking and rushing around. She makes an effort to take her lunch to work every day unlike many in the same profession who settle for a quick bite of toast. Work provides morning and afternoon tea, usually scones and slice/loaf which she will only very occasionally have a piece of. Her exercise involves going for a 30 minute walk after work and sometimes a spot of tennis.

7am Breakfast — Weight Watchers cereal, fruit and trim milk
10.30am Hanging out for my morning coffee — black coffee and banana
1pm Pretty hungry by lunchtime as it's been a busy morning! Salad and canned tuna, pottle of fat free yoghurt and an orange, cup of tea
3pm Black coffee and five almonds
7pm Beef casserole, potato, broccoli and carrots and a glass of white wine
8.30pm A cup of tea

I can tell you’re aware of the healthy food guidelines (not surprising since you work in the health sector) — your diet is almost textbook.

Women in your age group (60+) are at a higher risk of heart disease so it is great your diet is so low in saturated fat and salt (from the lack of processed foods).

Double check your breakfast cereal though — it’s recommended that breakfast cereals are 15g sugar per 100g, and sometimes the lower fat cereals can be very high in sugar, some contain more than a third sugar!

Standard yoghurt is considered a low fat food anyway, so don’t feel you need the special “lite” yoghurt unless you actually prefer the taste.

There’s lots of room for adding in a few indulgences, make sure you have the odd treat!
