An Independent Police Complaints Authority investigator could lose his job after he allegedly called a complainant "a complete arsehole".
Former police officer Larry Reid offered to resign after making the remarks about complainant Jakob Christie, the Sunday Star-Times reported.
Mr Christie, whose neck was allegedly broken by a baton when police broke up a rowdy party in Wellington last September, and 10 other young people have complained police used excessive and unnecessary force.
Mr Reid was investigating the complaint but is no longer involved.
The authority told the newspaper Mr Reid had offered his resignation and his future would be considered by the board at its next meeting after Easter.
A Queen's Counsel was now reviewing Mr Reid's investigation.
