Q. How can I stay sane when I've got so much to do to manage the different aspects of my business?
A. Health coach Karen McCallum replies:
Sanity is an excellent state to aim for and it's important to recognise when you're heading away from it. The signs may be different for
each person but you will probably know your own alarm bells well.
Once stress overtakes clarity, it is hard to climb back to a state of mind where you can achieve your goals.
To get the best performance from yourself, develop a routine to accommodate the basic principles of health - bodies love routines. The positive effects of a healthy body and mind will pass to your business.
The right balance of food, water, exercise, sleep, play, positive mental attitude, passion and rest is key.
Food - increase fruit and vegetable intake, remembering variety is important. Balance the ratio of proteins - say one third meat, fish, chicken, eggs, seeds and nuts, cheese and vegetarian proteins to two thirds vegetable portions.
Water - you should drink about two litres a day, depending on body weight.
Sleep - know your body. Are you getting enough sleep? The sleep before midnight is important to rejuvenate. Try a 10pm to 6am sleeping pattern.
Downtime - simple relaxation techniques can be very effective. Try taking 10 minutes for yourself twice a day. Sit comfortably, close your eyes and take deep slow breaths through the nose. As you breathe in the abdomen expands, breathe out and it contracts - a great way to release tension.
Your best investment in your business is in yourself.
You will be a greater success in all aspects of life, including your business, when you decide that mental, emotional and physical health are a priority.
