Security guard accused of money laundering was already overseas when police charged him

A security guard wanted for money laundering did not flee the country after being charged, as previously believed.

The Herald now understands police laid the charges against Kanwarpal Singh when he was overseas.

The case emerged in a Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA) decision.

The authority’s Trish McConnell said police made a complaint to the authority against Singh in April.

Singh had failed to appear in court on the money laundering charges so a warrant was issued for his arrest.

McConnell said in the PSPLA decision that police had told her Singh left New Zealand in January and had not returned.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Ali Ramsay of the Auckland Financial Crime Unit said the 29-year-old had four warrants for his arrest.

“Inquiries remain ongoing to locate him,” Ramsay told the Herald.

“As the matter is before the court, police are limited in providing further comment.”
