New Zealand would consider a trade deal with Taiwan but had yet to receive a formal proposal, a spokeswoman for Trade Negotiations Minister Jim Sutton said today.
It has been reported in a Taiwanese newspaper that Taiwan is seeking a free trade agreement with New Zealand.
Mr Sutton's spokeswoman told NZPA the suggestion had been made before but the New Zealand Government had yet to receive a formal proposal.
When received, it would be closely scrutinised and considered, she said.
"We're definitely interested in trade agreements. We really keen to improve market access for New Zealand exporters in markets all over the world. But this is not a formal proposal."
Mr Sutton will next week attend a meeting in Auckland of the New Zealand-Taiwan Business Council.
