Meridian Energy is planning to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into new wind farms in North Canterbury.
The company wants to put up 35 giant wind turbines - around 130 metres tall - on privately owned farm land in Hurunui.
Spokesman Alan Seay said wind is the answer to the area's power needs.
"There is a great wind resource down there, and wind is clean and green, so it's great for New Zealand."
The wind farm would generate enough electricity to supply 33,000 homes.
