Beach Haven Community Space construction begins

A new community space in Beach Haven is now under construction, and Kaipatiki Local Board celebrated the milestone with a sod turning yesterday.

The $460,000 project is transforming the vacant land at 364 Rangatira Road, the old Post Office site, into a valuable space for locals to enjoy in the centre of the village.

The space will include a new nautical themed playground, a small stage for performances, a boardwalk linking Rangatira Road to the Beach Haven car park, seating, picnic furniture and planter boxes for communal use.

The design of the project has been developed in partnership with the Beach Haven Placemaking Group, which currently maintains the site as a community project.

Kaip?tiki Local Board Chairperson Kay McIntyre says the start of construction is a significant milestone for the community that has contributed so much to shaping the space.

"It is very exciting that we have got to this stage in the project," she says.

"The Beach Haven Placemaking Group has worked tirelessly to guide us with a vision for the space, and we are very pleased to be delivering a project that will be of great benefit to this community. We are looking forward to continuing to work with them to ensure this great place is cared for when it is completed.

"This community space, right in the middle of the village, will be a real heart and meeting place for locals."

Construction begins this week and is likely to take several months to complete.

This project meets the Kaip?tiki Local Board Plan 2014 objective of creating vibrant town and village centres and enhancing Beach Haven is a key initiative.
