A life spent cutting hair has paid off for 54-year-old Jayne Thomas. She is the Supreme Award-winner at the L'Ore?al Colour Trophy Awards, writes Renee Jones
Jayne Thomas has fulfilled a lifelong dream and taken the crown as the best hairdresser in the country. The 54-year-old, from hair salon Servilles Newmarket,
says winning the New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year 2006 title is the culmination of a life's work. The Mt Albert resident won the Supreme Award at the distinguished L'Ore?al Colour Trophy Awards last month. ''It's absolutely surreal. It's the highest accolade I could have ever wished for. I've been in the industry for 32 years and this award is an acknowledgement for all the hard work over the years. It's a dream come true.'' When the awards began 13 years ago she decided she wanted to claim the ultimate prize. Along with the title, she has won a trip for two to Paris and London to see next year's United Kingdom L'Ore?al Colour Trophy Awards. Her passion for hairdressing began as a youngster, becoming inspired by her mother's hair salon at home in Wales before coming to New Zealand as a teenager. ''From the age of 4 I was fascinated. There was never a question I wanted to do anything else. I did my first haircut on my Mum when I was 10.'' Jayne got her first hairdressing job in Auckland, has owned two salons and has been working at Servilles for about 10 years. She has clients who've been with her for up to 14 years and she says the key to a good haircut is communication.
