Have a go, bro, and succeed - that was Mika's advice to a young South Aucklander. So, as Sharu Delilkan reports, he ran with it.
Years working with the master have given 19-year-old Jay Tewake the confidence to put together his own show, co-host it and perform in it. He is
very much the driving force of Glam Boy Youth Showcase. What's more, he's keen to give the South Auckland artists in the show the public profile he believes they deserve.
"Coming from Papatoetoe myself, I'm keen to bring the talent from our 'hood out to the city."
The show is one the AROHA Festival programme's 30 offerings, which all centre on the cultural heart of queer Auckland and colourful K Rd.
Highlights of the festival include the premiere performance of veteran entertainer Mika's new tribal pop opera, Po, composed by Gareth Farr and performed by Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
Also co-hosted by Glam Boy's Reece Pomana (aka Mimi Boiz), the showcase's performers include young dance crews such as G33K Movement, Sample Dance Crew and Divaz of La Salle.
Nineteen-year-old Tewake says he's grateful to Mika, who's mentored him for almost four years. In fact, he believes he owes everything to Mika.
"He helped me start my own company, Glam Boy Entertainment, and he's been a great mentor for me personally. Mika believes if it's not perfect, what's the point, and I totally understand where he's coming from. I know if I want to make it anywhere I'll only succeed if I make my mark."
Mika reckons he's lucky to have people like Tewake working with him.
"Jay came to me with lots of enthusiasm and ability but wasn't able to focus. I've basically taught him how to do just that," he says. "My main message is: it's not just about having a go, bro, it's all about succeeding."
