Lost in space
No one ever said getting to Mars would be easy.
Soon after launch, Russia's first interplanetary space mission in more than 20 years has already hit a snag. Lift-off of the Phobos-Grunt probe went as expected but then an engine put it perilously off course.
"The engine did not fire, neither the first nor the second burn occurred and this means that the craft was unable to find its bearings by the stars," said Russian space agency chief Vladimir Popovkin.
The initial plan was for the probe to land on one of Mars' moons, collect a sample from its surface, test Earth bacteria, and run an array of other tests, then head back to Earth and land in 2014. However, if the engineers can't right the rocket's trajectory the spacecraft might be destined to just float in space or re-enter Earth's atmosphere.
Heaps of hotspots
Not all that long ago, if you said WiFi, people might've thought you were referring to an exotic dish or designer-bred dog.
Now you can find WiFi (a mechanism to enable wireless internet connections) hotspots in libraries cafes and elsewhere throughout the country, letting you check your emails and surf the web. And you can expect their availability to keep increasing.
The Wireless Broadband Alliance says that global public WiFi hotspot numbers are expected to grow from 1.3 million this year to 5.8 million by 2015 - a 350 per cent increase.
Another notable feature of the report is that global mobile data traffic is expected to reach 16.84 million terabytes by 2014.
