WANGANUI - Bumper To Bumper is a real mummy's boy - a dead-set wet tracker.
The son of former top winter mare Car Park Flyer relished overnight rain in Wanganui to plough through the heavy conditions and win the $5000 Toops Wholesalers Juvenile over 1360m yesterday.
Bumper To Bumper, with Leanne Isherwood aboard, rallied to beat North City Express by a long neck with a half length back to local runner Mimic in third. Isherwood was suspended until the end of racing on July 6 for excessive use of the whip on Bumper To Bumper.
Car Park Flyer gave owners Cliff and Betty Condren huge enjoyment by winning nine races, seven from the Bill Skelton stable at Levin.
She was an out-and-out mudder who relished deep Trentham ground, winning the Parliamentary Handicap there for Don Sellwood who got the horse after Skelton had a stroke.
Condren and his wife own several city carpark buildings in Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland, hence the family names.
Bumper To Bumper, trained at Levin by Grant Searle, is the first foal from Car Park Flyer and is by Kingdom Bay. She has a weanling foal also by Kingdom Bay called Back Seat Betty waiting in the wings and is currently in foal to Al Akbar.
Condren has a long history in the racing game dating back to top galloper Togo, who won 11 races, seven in a row for trainer Wally McEwan, who also bred Car Park Flyer.
Condren said Bumper To Bumper would head to the last day of the Trentham winter carnival next month before tackling the Ryder Stakes at his home meeting at Otaki on July 27.
