Jarryd Hayne's NFL career has been put on hold.
The former rugby league star turned NFL running back and punt returner was today waived by the San Francisco 49ers after failing to fire in the regular season.
Hayne signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on in March, and shone during the preseason against other teams' back-up units.
However, once the NFL regular season got underway, he struggled. Hayne appeared in six games this season and registered eight carries for 25 yards and returned eight punts for 76 yards on special teams.
He had several fumbles in his punt return role and didn't impress enough as a pass blocker to justify a back-up running back role, despite injuries to other 49ers running backs.
Running back Kendall Gaskins was promoted to the active roster to replace Hayne.
It's not the end of the line for the Australian however, with Hayne now set to be placed on waivers, with the potential for another NFL side to pick him up and add him to their 53-man roster.
If he clears waivers, the 49ers could add him to their practice squad, giving him a chance to return to the side if there's injury or poor performance by his replacements.
Hayne still could have a future in the NFL, but the 49ers have decided he's not ready yet.
