Police have named a man killed when his car hit a tree in Kaingaroa Forest on Sunday.
He was Bharatbhai Patel, 51, of Rotorua.
Emergency services were called to the crash, on Dun Rd, at about 3.15pm.
Constable Regan Framp of the Rotorua police told the Rotorua Daily Post at the scene the vehicle had been travelling along Dun Rd, also known as the Kaingaroa straights, towards State Highway 38 when it lost control, left the road and hit a tree.
Mr Framp said the cause of the crash was yet to be determined but the road was icy.
"We have no details about the driver. The driver is still in the car."
The Rotorua Fire Brigade was using the jaws of life to cut the man's body from the car.
