The Crown has asked for an extended non-parole period for a 32-year-old Paeroa man who killed his sleeping flatmate.
In the High Court at Auckland yesterday, Hogan Tama Paul Harrison pleaded guilty to the murder of 25-year-old Brian Paul Olsen on August 31, 2000.
Prosecutor Yelena Yelavich told Justice Colin Nicholson that the Crown was seeking a minimum non-parole period longer than the normal 10 years.
That application will be heard in the High Court at Hamilton.
The police summary said there was friction over non-payment of rent and suggestions of items disappearing from the address in Thames Rd.
Mr Olsen was said to have feared for his safety and went to stay with his mother in the week before the killing, but returned to the flat.
Harrison went to the address late at night armed with a .22 rifle. He is said to have shot Mr Olsen four times in the head, tried to smother him with a pillow, struck him with the rifle and stabbed him.
Defence counsel Warren Pyke asked for a psychiatric report, ready for the Hamilton hearing.
