A motorcyclist killed after crashing at a bypass near Papamoa yesterday afternoon has been identified by police.

He was Christopher Neil Solomann, 61, from Gisborne.

Police said the accident occurred on the Tauranga-bound bypass on State Highway 2 about 1pm.

It appeared Mr Solomann, riding a Honda motorbike, failed to negotiate a moderate bend in the road. He struck a kerb and crashed into a bank.

No other vehicles were involved.

The section of road is currently closed to traffic with diversions in place.

Police were continuing to investigate the crash and asked to hear from anyone who may have witnessed it, or had seen a red sports bike travelling between Te Puke and Papamoa yesterday afternoon.

They were asked to phone Tauranga Police on (07) 577 4300.
