A man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing on Auckland's North Shore last night.

A 25-year-old man is in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital after he was stabbed in Birkenhead about 7pm.

Police arrested a 36-year-old unemployed man in Auckland today.

He will appear in the North Shore District Court tomorrow on charges of common assault.

Police spokesman Kevin Loughlin said police were called to the Palmerston Road property following an altercation between two men.

The victim was stabbed in his upper right leg with a "large knife'', police said, and received life-threatening injuries.

The man was taken to Auckland Hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery.
