The Knight family of Hamilton are making the health business a family affair.
Parents Len and Diana, and their children Nick, Gemma and Victoria, all work in the health industry, and while it may not be rare for parents and siblings to share similar occupations, the Knights are slightly different in that four of their five members all work at Waikato Hospital.
Mr and Mrs Knight, who began at the hospital in the 1970s, now work alongside daughters Gemma and Victoria.
Mr Knight is a facilities manager and his wife is an associate charge nurse in the emergency department.
The couple, whose eldest child, Nick, is a dentist in Dunedin, said they were not surprised their children chose careers in healthcare.
"Tori, as the little one, wanted to be a pathologist, and I always knew Gemma would end up in the medical field.
"I used to tell her as a child she'd make a great nurse. She's got a caring attitude and the ability to tune in topeople."
The elder of the two sisters, Gemma, is a registered nurse in Waikato's emergency department.
The 27-year-old, who has also worked in the neonatal intensive careunit, had a seven-month stint with the New Zealand Army as a truck driver in Egypt before returning to Waikato to work as a nurse.
Her younger sister, Victoria, 25, graduated as a bachelor of radiationtherapy from the University of Otago, and started working at the hospital in January.
The sisters say they chose to work at Waikato Hospital because of their parents, who between them have clocked more than 70 years' work there.
"Mum and dad have worked at Waikato Hospital for as long as I can remember, and because of them I've always wanted to do something in healthcare," said Victoria.
Despite all working at the hospital, which this week celebrates its 125th anniversary, the Knights say they rarely have time to catch up with one another.
"We are all too busy," said Gemma, "and all work different shifts."
