Shops, offices and a hotel in central Wellington were evacuated for almost an hour and a half this morning after a suspicious package was found.
Inspector Paris Razos said the suspicious-looking metal box was found in a stairwell of Plimmer Towers, and prompted the evacuation in the Boulcott Street and Plimmer Steps area.
"The packaging and location of the item concerned both the person who found it and police," Mr Razos said.
However, investigations showed the item had been inadvertently dropped by a cleaner and people were able to return to work.
