The neighbour shot by wheelchair-bound gunman Shayne Sime in Christchurch last week says he bears him no ill will.
The man, who was not named, and an armed offenders squad member were caught in the crossfire when Mr Sime started shooting indiscriminately in Wadhurst Place, Burnside, on June 28.
More than two hours after the rampage began, Sime was shot dead by police.
In a statement issued through police, the man said after he was shot in the chest by Sime officers told him to lie low in the house.
"As I was speaking to police shots continued to strike the front of my house. I shut all the doors to our house and my 16-year-old son and I lay on the floor behind an internal wall to shelter from the shots."
He said police then told him to leave by the back door.
"I was very scared that I would be shot again or that my son would be hit."
They eventually left the house and jumped the back fence where they waited at another property to be escorted to safety by police.
"I never knew the man who shot me and I do not bear any ill will towards him," the man said.
He was treated at hospital for his injuries and discharged a short time later.
He thanked the police for their actions, saying they dealt with the situation "very well".
Residents returned to their homes in the cul-de-sac at the weekend after a week-long scene examination by police.
