Ellie Hutchinson checks into a cottage just minutes away from Norfolk Island's tiny airport.
Getting there: Coast is only a three-minute drive away from the tiny airport. Visitors can opt to be collected and have their hire car waiting for them at their accommodation; I chose to hop straight into my cute red Toyota Ractis, which was waiting for me.
Check-in experience: Totally hassle-free. We were casually greeted by Raewyn, who explained where my cottage was.
Room: I had one of three gorgeous little wood cabins called Niau Cottages, overlooking a paddock with two friendly horses and a beautiful view out over the rolling hills to the ocean. There was a large double bedroom with sliding doors opening on to the huge deck, a separate bathroom, an open-plan kitchen and lounge, which also opened on to the deck. The kitchen was fully stocked and had a fridge, microwave and washing machine.
Price: $210 per night for two, which includes a car plus insurance.
What's so good about this place? The privacy, the space, the ease of parking, and having the option of being self-sufficient. There is also a saltwater swimming pool on site. Bath towels, beach towels, picnic baskets, Esky bins, tea and coffee are provided.
And the bad? Finding the on-site spa room was a bit tricky, as the standalone hut isn't clearly signposted. It was pouring with rain when the time came for my massage and dodging the sheltering cows to get in was a fun experience.
What's in the neighbourhood? Apart from cows wandering on the path and road, it is an easy walk down to the KAVHA historical area at Kingston and a short drive to Burnt Pine town.
Toiletries: Locally made soaps are a nice touch and shampoo and washing powder were provided.
Food and drink: Milk is provided to start you off with teas and coffees and there is a great choice of cafes and restaurants nearby.
The bed: Big and comfy, with plenty of extra blankets for the cooler months.
Bathroom: A separate bathroom with high wooden angular ceilings creates a feeling of space. The shower is powerful.
Noise: One of the most peaceful and quiet places I have ever stayed.
Room service: Let the owners know if you wish to have your room serviced, they are always on hand to help and offer tips.
Exercise facilities: Apart from the swimming pool, you are spoilt for choice with plenty of beautiful walks nearby, bikes can be hired and there is a nine-hole golf course and the beach a short drive away.
Value for money: Superb value considering have your own cottage with everything you need.
Perfect for: A romantic getaway, a family holiday or a weekend away with friends.
Would I return? Absolutely.
