He later turned himself in at the Coomera Police Station with self-inflicted stab wounds and is expected to be charged within the next 24 hours, The Brisbane Times reported.
"My friend was the one pulling the man off the woman, he was bashing her with a rock," a witness said following the accident.
"The man was down there and had his knee on her chest, her legs were sticking out of the car but the rest of her was trapped."
Early reports suggested that Ms Brown's child was in the vehicle, however it was later reported that the toddler had been dropped off at daycare prior to the accident.
It is not yet known if Mr Patea is the father of Ms Brown's baby girl.
"I went to the garden and the car was overturned...and there was a lady in the car upside down. The car was all crashed and in bits and pieces," one of the street's residents Ted Harding said.
"She wasn't in a very good state. She had blood running down her face where she'd been bashed.
