Japan deals with quake aftermath
KASHIWAZAKI, Japan - More than 10,000 people sheltered in evacuation centres in Japan's northwest after a strong earthquake flattened hundreds of houses, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 900.
As aftershocks continued, rain began to fall, and forecasts for two days of wet weather raised fears of mudslides that could add to the devastation.

Australia 'being vindictive' over terror suspect
The solicitor for Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef said the Australian Federal Government was being vindictive after it announced he would be transferred to Sydney's Villawood detention centre.

UK expels Russian diplomats as Litvinenko row escalates
Britain ordered the expulsion of four Russian diplomats over Moscow's refusal to hand over the main suspect in the murder of ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, escalating tension between Russia and the West.
Russia said the decision was "immoral", would prompt retaliation and could only entail "the most serious consequences for Russian-British relations", according to a foreign ministry spokesman.
