Pakistanis launch attack after mosque talks fail
ISLAMABAD - Pakistani forces stormed a mosque compound in the capital to clear it of militants after talks to end a week-long standoff broke down.
Explosions rang out over Islamabad, where troops had been surrounding the Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, for a week after clashes erupted between armed student radicals and government forces.

Four convicted of botched London bomb plot
LONDON - Four men were convicted of plotting to bomb London's transport system on July 21, 2005 in a botched attempt to replicate Islamist suicide bombings that had killed 52 people two weeks earlier.
Police said the men, Muslims of African origin, would have caused carnage on a similar scale to the attacks a fortnight before but although the detonators on their makeshift bombs fired, the main charges failed to explode.

Abbas accuses Hamas of giving al Qaeda foothold in Gaza
ROME - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas was protecting al Qaeda and allowing it to gain a foothold in Gaza.
Hamas, which seized control of the Gaza Strip last month after routing forces loyal to the secular Abbas, has been criticised by al Qaeda's number second in command, Ayman al-Zawahri, who had accused it of serving US interests.
