Kiara's mother made an emotional post after her daughter died.
Officers have warned that people could face police action for posting "malicious" comments about the death of a 2-year-old girl who was left in a car that rolled into a river.
Kiara Moore was recovered from a silver Mini that had gone into the river Teifi in Cardigan, Wales, onMonday.
Dyfed-Powys Police, which led the search for Kiara after the car was reported missing with her in it, warned people to "think very carefully" before posting and not to speculate. "We are aware of comments on threads across social media which are being looked at.
"Posts considered to be malicious will be recorded and police action may follow."
Kiara's parents, Kim Rowlands and Jet Moore, initially believed the car had been stolen after it vanished with Kiara inside from near a slipway leading to the river.
"Went back to the office to get money from the desk and came back to no car. Looked in the river no signs. So we thought she and the car had been taken."
In an emotional Facebook post Rowlands wrote: "Sadly yesterday my beautiful baby girl passed away! Due to my own stupidity, I will have to live with the guilt for the rest of my life! " mummy loves you baby girl and I'm so sorry"!"
This post has too since been removed, but the message prompted a slew of derogatory comments aimed at the couple.
One woman questioned why Kiara has been left in the car alone and another said there should be a charge of "involuntary manslaughter".
A third wrote: "Who turns to facebook when their little girl has just tragically died!".
Police said inquiries are continuing into the accident, including an examination of the vehicle.
An inquest into Kiara's death was opened at Ceredigion Coroner's Office yesterday and has now been adjourned.
