Video footage shows the plane erupting in a fireball before emergency crews sprayed the plane with foam to bring the fire under control.
There were no reports of injuries.
The runway has been shut down while authorities investigate.
According to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen, the landing gear on the DC-10 aircraft collapsed, causing a fire as the plane was rolling.
"I think the pilot did a pretty good job of keeping it close to the runway, but of course you can see the ball of fire and with all that fuel, that was a pretty big explosion," Stephen Lloyd, former safety director for the FAA, said.
The fireball followed an incident in which an American Airlines flight burst into flames during take-off at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, injuring at least eight people.
