Victoria weather: Wye River flash floods submerge cars, trigger alerts

A popular holiday spot has been hit with severe flash flooding after thunderstorms and torrential rain drenched communities in Victoria, Australia.

Footage shows one car being swept into the sea because of the flooding of the Wye River, about two and a half hours southwest of Melbourne.

Social media pictures also show multiple cars being submerged in water and being stuck against a bridge at the Wye River.

VicEmergency issued an emergency warning for residents living in Wye River, Kennett River, Cumberland River, Lorne and surrounds at about 2.30pm on Thursday.

“Very dangerous conditions are being caused by a severe thunderstorm and flash flooding,” the emergency warning said.

It told people to “be aware” as heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
