US army wants tech update

For the first time since the end of the Cold War, the United States Army is updating its plans for electronic warfare, calling for more use of high-powered microwaves, lasers and infra-red beams to attack enemy targets and control angry crowds.

Its new manual also identifies ways to protect soldiers against remote-controlled roadside bombs and other non-traditional warfare used by increasingly sophisticated insurgents.
