Total Eclipse Of The Heart singer Bonnie Tyler in a coma after emergency surgery

Bonnie Tyler is in an induced coma after undergoing emergency bowel surgery.

The 74-year-old Welsh singer was rushed to hospital in Faro, Portugal, with a perforated intestine late last month.

On Thursday, local media reports said that although she had been stable until Wednesday, her condition had worsened in recent hours.

Correio da Manhã, a Portuguese news outlet, said that she was now “unconscious” and breathing with the aid of a ventilator. It reported that the singer had been moved from an intermediate care unit to an intensive care ward.

It also said doctors caring for her had admitted that they were unable to predict how the situation would evolve in the coming hours. Tyler is understood to have been brought to hospital on April 30.

On Wednesday, a spokesman for Tyler said, “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery.

“The surgery went well, and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Tyler is best known for her 1983 hit Total Eclipse Of The Heart. She had four other top 10 hits, including It’s A Heartache and Holding Out For A Hero.

The singer, who splits her time between the UK and Portugal, has been married to Robert Sullivan, a property developer, since 1973.

Earlier this year, she said she was “never going to retire”, adding: “I look at Tom Jones – he’s amazing. His voice is as strong as ever, and he’s got 10 years on me.”
