Nantes.

A man reportedly yelling "Allahu Akbar" ran over 10 pedestrians at a Christmas market in Nantes with his vehicle, killing one, then attempted suicide.

Ten staff members, including the editor at the satirical newspaper

Charlie Hebdo

, and two police officers are shot dead in the paper's offices by brother Cherif and Said Kouachi. The brothers were killed by police in a shootout two days later near Charles de Gaulle airport.

The magazine was believed to be targeted after depicting a the prophet Mohammed in a cartoon, a move that was both defended and criticised by commentators.

are shot dead as they try to escape their hiding place at a printing works in Dammartin-en-Goële (a town 40 km north-west of Paris).

Meanwhile Amédi Coulibaly, a 32-year-old French citizen, had been holding several people hostage in a Jewish supermarket in Vincennes. He is shot dead in a raid by security forces, but not before he had killed four of the hostages.

12 November, 2015:

Suicide bombers strike Beirut.

A pair of suicide bombings killed at least 43 people in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, and more than 230 were injured. Islamic state takes responsibility for the attacks.

November 13, 2015

Paris attacks.

At least 130 people were killed and nearly 100 more critically injured when eight militants infiltrated the Bataclan theatre during an Eagles of Death Metal rock concert, killing at least 100 people with grenades and gunfire.

Eight more people were killed in a shootout at Petit Cambodge restaurant and 18 outside La Belle Equipe bar. Five more are killed on the Avenue de la Republique.

Candlelight vigils were held in New Zealand by French communities to honour those who died and the Sky Tower was lit up in the colours of the French flag.

, suspected of organising the Paris attacks, is killed during a police raid on an apartment in Saint-Denis, Paris.

June 28, 2016:

Ataturk, Turkey.

Militants storm Istanbul's Ataturk Airport killing 44 people in a series of explosions when militants armed with assault rifles and bombs. Three attackers also die, two of them believed to have been suicide bombers. Turkish officials blame Islamic state for the attack, the third this year on Turkey's biggest city.

July 3, 2016:

Baghdad.

At least 142 people die in a suicide bomb attack in the Shia neighbourhood of Karrada, Baghdad, and about 185 were injured. The attack was the deadliest terror attack in Iraq in a year and one of the worst single bombings in more than a decade of war and insurgency. The Sky Tower is lit up for the victims of the bombing after requests from the Iraqi community. Candlelit vigils are held in various parts of New Zealand by Iraqis mourning for their country.
