Rachel Smalley, photographer Jo Currie and videographer Bradley Ambrose are travelling with World Vision for the Herald's Forgotten Millions Campaign to the epicentre of the refugee crisis in Europe. Today, Currie captures images revealing the human toll of the crisis.
Malak, 8 months old, above, and her grandmother Fatima are from Daraa in Syria. They travelled from Turkey to Serbia and were in the country one day before they walked for the border.
Three generations of the family are travelling together; Malak, her parents and her grandparents. They hope to reach Germany this week.
Qais is from Aleppo
Three-year-old Qais is from Aleppo. He is spending the night with his parents and sister in a holding camp inside Hungary.
His family left Aleppo three years ago and moved to the countryside, but when the fighting intensified they crossed the border into Turkey.
Ousama the widower
Ousama is from Damascus. He has two daughters, Wafa, 7, and Seema, 6, and is a widower. His wife was killed by ISIS.
Six months ago they began entering homes and raping and killing women and Ousama's wife was stabbed to death.
He says his daughters have suffered enough and he wants to move to Europe to give them a better life.
"Death boat" from Turkey
Abraham and Zachary, 2, are from Al-Hasakah and came to Serbia after sailing to Greece on a rubber dinghy "death boat" from Turkey.
Abraham brought Zachary to a medical clinic in Belgrade because he had a bad cough. The doctor said Zachary has a virus that is becoming increasingly common among refugee children.
