Surfer attacked by shark on NSW's mid-north coast; beaches closed

A surfer has been attacked by a shark on New South Wales' mid-north coast.

The man in his 20s is being treated for a severe arm injury after the attack at Crescent Head Beach, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.

Four crews from the Westpac Rescue helicopter attended the incident, which occurred at about 4.30pm.

NSW's Department of Primary Industries said it was assisting Surf Life Saving NSW, which has closed Killick And Crescent Head beaches.

They said the man involved was a surfer.

The last shark attack in NSW unfolded at Tuncurry on the NSW mid-north coast on May 18.

Surfer Mark Sanguinetti died after being attacked by a suspected 4.5-metre white shark.

The 59-year-old father, from Sydney's northern beaches, was bitten on his upper right thigh while surfing with friends just after 11am, and died at the scene.
