Solomon Islands truce hangs in the balance

The New Zealand High Commissioner in Solomon Islands fears a tenuous truce which has held for the past two weeks could be on the verge of collapse.

Nick Hurley says he is worried about the abandoned Parliamentary session in Honiara yesterday, intended to elect a Prime Minister to replace the ousted Bartholomew Ulufa'alu.

The election was called off when fewer than half of the elected MP's turned up.

Mr Hurley says local MPs were worried they would become easy targets for the Malaitan Eagle Force by attending.

He says the vote may be held tomorrow, once a secure venue has been sorted out, and locals are praying the rebels are prepared to wait.
