Seven men detained in an arrest on a Sydney street after warnings a “violent act” was potentially being planned have denied any wrongdoing – claiming they were only on holiday in Australia after being released without charge.
The men had travelled from Victoria when tactical officers rammed a white Hyundaii30 and deployed rounds of rubber bullets during a traffic stop at the intersection of George and Campbell Sts in Liverpool on Thursday.
A second vehicle, a Victorian-plated Toyota Yaris, was also intercepted a few minutes away but did not sustain serious damage.
On Friday, the men, at least one of whom was reportedly being monitored by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), were assisting police with their inquiries, according to officers.
They were released yesterday afternoon, with NSW Police saying the “justification for their ongoing detention no longer exists”. None of the men was charged with any offences.
