Teachers noted that strict bans led to less phone usage during class, and surveys found that this made teachers happier in their jobs.
The paper relied on test scores, school records, GPS data, survey findings and figures from Yondr, a company that creates magnetic lockable pouches for phones. Researchers examined data collected between 2018 and 2025 at more than 41,000 schools.
Two-thirds of US states have implemented rules that limit or outright ban phones on school grounds.
Nearly 5000 schools use lockable pouches to reduce phone usage during school hours.
Students are typically required to lock their devices in the pouches when they arrive at school and are not able to use them until the final bell rings.

They also have broad support among educators - 90% of teachers supported phone restrictions during instructional hours, according to the National Education Association.
