Russian partygoer has emergency surgery after drinking deadly cocktail made by celebrity chef

A Russian man was rushed into emergency surgery last week after his stomach ruptured when he drank a deadly cocktail containing liquid nitrogen.

The injured man, identified as 38-year-old Sergey, was attending an end-of-year function at the Igra Stolov “Game of Tables” cooking studio in Moscow when he was served the drink, which was prepared by an unnamed celebrity chef, Metro reported.

Several cocktails at the event reportedly used liquid nitrogen, a substance sometimes used by mixologists to create dramatic smoky effects.

Attendees later claimed they were not warned about the dangers of consuming the extremely cold liquid before it had fully evaporated, according to the Daily Mail.

Witnesses said Sergey was goaded by the chef to drink the cocktail immediately, which he did.

Moments later, he was seen clasping his stomach in pain before collapsing to the ground, to the horror of onlookers who had moments earlier been laughing, the report said.

Guests were left in disbelief as medics arrived and attempted to treat him at the venue.

Sergey was rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to reconstruct his torn stomach.

Doctors later confirmed Sergey experienced a rapid expansion of gas inside his body after the liquid nitrogen vaporised, creating extreme internal pressure that ruptured his stomach, the Mirror reported.

Liquid nitrogen boils intensely at room temperature, expanding hundreds of times in volume, which makes it extremely dangerous if swallowed, according to Metro.

The sudden expansion can tear the stomach lining, cause internal bleeding, and freeze surrounding tissues.

Metro reported that there have been several reported deaths linked to its consumption and its use in food and drinks is strongly discouraged and heavily regulated in several countries.

The Mirror reported Sergey was conscious and recovering following surgery, although his condition remained serious.
