TVNZ journalist Joy Reid says that riot police are getting serious and are using water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Tear gas has also been used to control the crowd.
Revelers set off smoke bombs in the national colors - blue, white and red - obscuring Napoleon's triumphal arch as police tackled the crowd using water canons.
Some also threw objects including bottles and chairs at police forces who responded with tear gas.
Le Figaro journalist Paul Carcenac tweeted: "Clashes between thugs who throw bottles and CRS. People flee through the adjacent streets."
Another Le Figaro journalist reported someone had thrown an empty glass bottle at a family.
A mayor in Paris, Jeanne d'Hauteserre, was disappointed, saying, "The party is ruined because of a handful of thugs".
Others on Twitter expressed how downhearted they were about the riots.
Ashley Bullard tweeted: "Sad to hear reports of looting, riot police being called in and tear gas being fired in Paris following France's World Cup win."
Another Twitter user said: "The French ppl are so happy about winning that they set fire to cars, starts riots and celebrate with throwing stones at the police and firefighters."
