At least one person is dead after a passenger train carrying between 50 to 60 passengers collided with a excavator in NSW's central west.
The crash occurred about 3km east of the Newbridge railway station at about 11.30am (1.30pm NZT).
NSW Police confirmed the 25-year-old man driving the excavator died
at the scene.
The NSW ambulance service said the condition of the passengers on board the train had not yet been established.
Seven ambulances and the Ambulance Rescue Helicopter have headed to the scene.
A Newbridge resident told AAP the CountryLink XPT train did not appear to have tipped over or left the line.
After hearing "heaps of sirens" this morning the woman, named Julie, went to see what had happened and saw the train stationary, with "a lot of people around" at one of the cuttings.
"It doesn't look like it has gone off the line, we were wondering what all the fuss was about," she said.
The XPT service, which would have come from Sydney and travels through to Dubbo, typically reaches Newbridge station at about 11.20am, she said.
She said there had been trackwork going on in the area in recent times.
A RailCorp spokesman confirmed the crash occurred on a section of line controlled by the Australian Rail Track Corporation.
"Road access to the location is difficult and arrangements are being made to move passengers away from the site of the incident," the spokesman said.
Police will establish a crime scene, investigate the cause of the crash and prepare a report for the coroner.
