NZ woman hurt in Indian train crash

A New Zealand woman has been hospitalised after a speeding train derailed in western India.

Fifteen carriages of the Delhi-bound Mandore Express flew off the tracks early yesterday when the driver suddenly braked near Banshkov, a village about 40km south of Jaipur, police superintendent Vipin Kumar Pande said.

A broken rail track punctured one car, killing at least nine passengers, Mr Pande told The Associated Press.

Rescuers used machinery to cut open some of the cars to free trapped passengers, he said.

Nineteen people were hospitalized - three of whom where in a serious condition, Mr Pande said.

O ne of the injured was a New Zealand woman, the Press Trust of India reported.

She was taken to Sawai Mansingh Hospital for treatment.
