Workers completed cutting off the bow of the sunken Kursk nuclear submarine yesterday in a key step before the vessel can be lifted from the bottom of the Barents Sea, the Dutch consortium running the salvage operation said.
Cameras and remote-controlled vehicles verified that the cutting was completed, said Larissa Van Seumeren, spokeswoman for Mammoet-Smit International. Russian officials had insisted the bow be removed from the submarine because of concern it could break off and hamper the lifting and because it may contain unexploded torpedoes.
The lifting of the submarine should proceed around September 25 "if all the continued operations go as planned and the weather stays good," Van Seumeren said.
