Mexican baby dies after granny collapses on him

MEXICO CITY - A Mexican granny accidentally killed her 11-month-old baby grandson when she had a stroke, fell on top of him and suffocated him.

The baby's parents returned home to find 64-year-old Maria Teodora Maldonado unconscious on top of their dead son, Mexico City authorities said. The grandmother had been babysitting while the parents went to work.

"She collapsed because of a brain haemorrhage and the little one was trapped under the woman's body," a spokesman for the Mexico City ministry of public security said on Wednesday.

"It's very sad. I've covered police matters for a long time and I don't remember any case like this," he said.

The grandmother was being treated in hospital.
