Melbourne Cup: Woman shoves police officer into garden

In one of the more bizarre scenes to come out of this year's Melbourne Cup, a 25-year-old woman was caught on camera pushing a police officer into the garden.

Phone footage shows the woman looking surprised by her actions before she is led away in handcuffs.

It took onlookers by surprise as seemingly out of nowhere the woman, wearing a short blue dress, ran up to the policeman and shoved him into the garden.

According to the Daily Mail one of the onlookers can be heard asking the woman "what did you do?" as she's taken away by police.

The woman was charged with assaulting a police officer after the incident at Flemington Racecourse.

Acting Superintendent Steven Cooper told media it was very "odd behavior".

"She just walked up to me and I thought, what is she doing? Is she just coming to say hello or something. Clearly not."

He said the crowd of around 94,000 had generally been very well behaved with only five police evictions up until that incident.
