There were no presents, cake or balloons on Mars, but the humans who control the Spirit rover from Earth spent the day celebrating the robot's first birthday - an unexpected milestone.
Spirit and its twin, Opportunity, were designed to work for at least three months - but they are stillgoing strong. Since their arrival on Mars, Spirit has driven over 4km of the planet's surface. The two robots have sent 62,000 images back to Earth.
