Man accused of bat attack on officer in court

A man accused of attacking a New Plymouth police officer with a baseball bat has appeared in court.

The 22-year-old from Hawera was remanded on bail without plea until October 18 by New Plymouth District Court on a charge of assault with a weapon.

Police said the officer was talking to a motorist when a man came up from behind and swung at baseball bat at him.

Fortunately, the officer caught a glimpse of his attacker and managed to deflect the blow with his arm.
