He told the court he tried to get Todd to explain it to him in subsequent meetings.
"I tried to canvass from Mr Todd what he may have meant in saying that to his father," he said.
He said Todd told him that what he meant was that he was "glad that he got caught" and "he turned himself in and the events had scared him … but what frightened him was that he realised he had the capacity to carry out his fantasies and he also stated that the offence didn't go as he had planned but he was unable to elaborate on that point".
Todd was 19 when he stalked Ms Dixon for 54 minutes as she walked home from Flinders Street Station.
The court heard last week that the Broadmeadows man followed his victim because "her appearance was of a sexual appeal to him" before attacking her.
Todd had been lurking around Flinders Street after a night of drinking and smoking cannabis with friends. He was loitering alone when Ms Dixon walked past him at 11.07pm on June 12, 2018.
After the murder, he returned to Princes Park to find police had set up a perimeter. He was told to go home.
Todd, carrying Ms Dixon's phone, instead went to a train station and slept on a bench before buying a meat pie and a coffee and catching public transport home.
The court heard Todd was a sexual sadist who was obsessed with violent sex, rape and "snuff" films depicting a person being murdered.
He began watching pornography at the age of 11 and the videos he watched became increasingly violent.
On the day after the murder, Todd watched more violent pornography before being told by family and friends that his picture was on the news.
He turned himself in, initially denying any involvement in Ms Dixon's rape and murder. But in the face of overwhelming evidence, including CCTV footage of him stalking his victim, he confessed.
Todd will be sentenced at a later date. Justice Stephen Kaye is considering a life sentence.
