Iran pulls out of US peace talks as Trump extends Iran ceasefire

Iran has made a “final decision” to withdraw from peace talks with the United States.

Officials in Tehran have blamed America’s ongoing naval blockade of Iranian ports for their decision to cancel negotiations, which were set to take place in Pakistan on Wednesday (local time).

US Vice-President JD Vance had been expected to fly to Islamabad earlier, but his trip was postponed indefinitely, sources told news site Axios.

The breakdown in negotiations raises the prospect of renewed fighting, with the temporary ceasefire in place ending..

However, the White House in the past few minutes said that US President Donald Trump was extending the ceasefire, due to expire about midday today.

“I have ... directed our military to continue the blockade and, in all other respects remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the ceasefire until their proposal is submitted and discussions are concluded one way or the other,” Trump posted on X.

Donald Trump gathered his senior national security team at the White House today (NZT), which included Vance, Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, Pete Hegseth, the Defence Secretary, and Dan Caine, his top general.

The US President said he expected Washington to resume striking Iran if a peace deal was not reached.
