"All she said was she was lucky she wasn't inside," Ms Rees told the Sunday Herald Sun.
"She just kept saying to me she was next door in the line and she just needed to talk to her mum."
Ms Parkinson had only moved to France the week before the attacks and had just accepted a position as a tutor in Paris.
Her aunt said: "We are told Emma sustained a number of gunshot wounds to her hip. As can be expected, Emma was scared and overwhelmed and desperately wanted to see her mum.
"We are confident Emma will make a full recovery physically. Obviously there is quite a long road ahead for Emma mentally," Ms Gunner said.
Australia's Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has described Ms Parkinson as a "brave girl" who was in "good spirits" after surgery.
He said he "did his best" to cheer her up when he talked to her via telephone.
"I told her we are all thinking of her. She is a brave girl and in all the circumstances, in good spirits,' he said.
"Every parent can sympathise with the thought that their child has been injured in somthing like this.
"The Australian ambassador to France, Stephen Brady, saw her after she had surgery. Nothing will feel as good as when her mother arrives in a day or so."
