A man has savagely killed a kangaroo by slitting its throat in a disturbing video that has prompted animal advocates to launch an investigation into the incident.
The footage - which started going viral on Chinese social media this week - shows a man of Asian appearance holdinga wounded kangaroo by the tail with his left hand and bludgeoning it to death with a hunting knife held in his right hand. The marsupial winces and tries to escape as the man slashes its neck at least 18 times.
The person filming the incident can be heard laughing as the man pushes his right leg into the kangaroo then leans forward to finishes off the bloody attack. The animal can then be seen lying limp in a pool of blood.
It is not yet known exactly when the footage was filmed but it is believed to have taken place in NSW, news.com.au reported.

A NSW RSPCA spokesperson said the organisation was investigating the incident following a complaint from a member of the public.
All native fauna, including kangaroos, are protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.
Although the NSW Commercial Kangaroo Harvest Management Plan 2017-2021 was declared as an Approved Wildlife Trade Management Plan by the Commonwealth Minister for Environment and Energy on 17 December 2016.

"Any commercial harvest of kangaroos is undertaken in accordance with the management plan and is limited to the four most abundant and widespread kangaroo species in NSW (red kangaroo, eastern grey kangaroo, western grey kangaroo and wallaroo)," a NSW Department of Primary Industries spokesperson told news.com.au in a statement.
"Non-commercial licences for culling kangaroos for the purposes of damage mitigation and public safety are issued by National Parks and Wildlife Service area offices. There is no quota for non-commercial culling of kangaroos but kangaroo products (meat or skins) from such culling cannot be sold."
