Ferry flights are when a crew returns an aircraft to a base, deliver a new aircraft from its place of manufacture to its customers or from a maintenance facility for repairs, overhaul or other work.
No passengers were on the flight.
Hawaiian Airlines said the plane "experienced a left engine issue on final approach" at the airport.
"A left engine fire reported upon landing was extinguished by the aircraft fire extinguishing system and local fire officials."
But the FAA told CBS that the aircraft "experienced a right engine flyer fire upon landing. The fire had already been extinguished by the time fire crews arrived."
An airport spokesman told CBS that there were no issues or alarms when the aircraft was in the air. It's believed the problem was a compressor stall, which is similar to a car backfiring.
No one was injured and the FAA is investigating.
