PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) A Haitian man was killed and an Irish woman received minor injuries when they were beaten with a hammer during a break-in at the orphanage where they worked, police said Monday.
Police inspector Gilbert Conseillant said that three men demanded money when they showed up Thursdaynight at the Kay Christine orphanage in a rural village in the mountains above the capital of Port-au-Prince.
Gena Heraty of Ireland runs the special needs program for the orphanage, home to about 400 children.
Heraty said in a video interview posted on The Irish Independent newspaper's website that she gave the attackers 400 euros, but they wanted more. Armed with a hammer and a gun, the attackers struck Heraty several times and beat night watchman Cesar "Major" Edward, who later died.
The police inspector said authorities believed at least one of the attackers was once an orphan who lived at the home. He said the robbers suspected there was more money stashed in the orphanage.
