A major sinkhole has swallowed vehicles at a popular camping spot near Queensland's Rainbow Beach overnight.
It was reported that a car, caravan and truck were sunk almost immediately.
Police said the hole opened up slowly from about 11pm (2am NZT).
One woman ran screaming through nearby campsites banging on caravans and yelling for people to get out, ABC News reported.
The sinkhole was estimated to be about 100 metres by 100 metres and around three metres deep, ABC News reported.
Campers described their horror on social media.
One camper Melanie Wotherspoon wrote on Facebook "yep, can't believe we made it out."
"I thought we were goners for sure, was truly scary how fast it came into our camp site and swallowed it up."
It's believed up to 200 people were evacuated from the area and others were warned to pack up and get ready to leave.
